Zeds Dead - Adrenaline EPFinally Zeds Dead release their long-awaited EP ‘Adrenaline’.

In The Beginning starts the EP with deep wobbles before Adrenaline delivers exactly what it promises: Dancefloor adrenaline is spades along with some great vocal samples which balances nicely with the tearing synth lines.

Oh No features pitched-up vocals with the signature hip-hop chopped beat & those synth patches – this track really delivers. Oldschool piano riffs, horns, floaty female vocals all glued together with a healthy slab of Zeds inspired bass. Vintage Zeds Dead.

Choosing my favourite track on the EP was very tough but I’ve got to hand it to Hit Me. I’ve never heard Zeds Dead produce something like this & I love it. Brilliant, Zeds Dead at their best.

Adrenaline - EP - Zeds Dead

Hi World! Did you think we’d died? Yeh we did too for a bit (musically of course). We’ve had a bit of a hiatus over Christmas, but first things first. Merry Christmas & Happy (Belated) New Year!

We’ve been quiet over the period for one simple reason … not much is taking our fancy musically at the moment…. so I’ve been going back to the slightly older stuff & finding some absolute gems.

Of course, that isn’t to say we’ve been sitting in knitting socks over Christmas. Oh no, we’ve had some fantastic nights up in Newcastle so a huge thank you has to go to the DJs, MCs, promotion teams, managers & staff at Digital, Cosmic Ballroom, World Headquarters & TheCut. You know who you are … without you Newcastle would be nothing. You really do make it happen.

An enormous apology to Ihsaan over at NoiseWave who sent me his excellent review of Gui Boratto’s 2011 album III. He actually sent me it weeks ago & I’ve just never gotten round to posting it so I’m going to link to it instead of a copy & paste. You deserve the credit. Gui Boratto III Album Review @ NoiseWave.

How Big Is Your Drop?

I don’t think I’m the only one thinking that to many people “dubstep” is now synonymous with “Skrillex”. Now I like Skrillex, I think technically he has skills. What I don’t like is the movement, the almost sub-genre this has spawned where tracks are made not for their musical content, harmonies, rhythms or lyrics but simply for the drop. The defining factor of the track (and therefore it’s success) seems to be – How big, filthy, noisy & musically irrelevant can I make this drop?

To this end you’ll probably be hearing a lot more of the deeper side of dub / reggae on LR from now on. In that vain, I found this track courtesy of our friends over at Vacay Vitamins.

STFU, I Want Music!

OK, OK! Here you go.

I first heard Noisia’s new track on Zane Lowe’s show last night & immediately loved it.

It builds nicely to a laid back hip-hop beat then drops into an energetic kick-led D&B pattern before kicking off big-style … would I say it was instantly recognisable as Noisia? Nope – but that’s a good thing – they continue to push boundaries & their sound continues to progress & grow.

It’s getting a Beatport early release on November 21st & on Deadmau5′s label Mau5trap (via iTunes) on December 19th (What a great Christmas present)!

Camo & Krooked

Next up are Austrian duo Camo & Krooked … I was going to do a full review of their second album ‘Cross The Line’ but frankly it’s pointless … it’s brilliant. Buy it. Listen to it. Enjoy it. Listen to it again, several times.

Mungo’s Hifi

A change of pace with this offering from Glasgow based Mungo’s Hifi. Their latest album Forward Ever is available to buy (on vinyl!) now from here (preview below)

Plus a FREE DOWNLOAD of Indian Summer

Hi all! It’s been a while hasn’t it!?!? Well we were planning a big comeback post but this is just WAY too good not to post immediately…

If you’re wondering, I found this on the brilliant Big Up Magazine Podcast 50 – Phaeleh Mix

and if you’re liking the depth…..

Another quality piece of production from LR favourites Noisia. Teaming up with Phace on this one, its an avalanche of shuddering beats and bass. Definitely worth checking out if you havent heard this yet.

I’d also like to recommend this little beauty from Phace. Released on neosignal a few months back. Definitely pushing the sound of D+B forward and far removed from some of the D+B cheese thats been floating around the charts of lately! Enjoy!

Editor: This post was originally scheduled for mid-August, it’s my fault it’s horribly out of date – Adam.

I’m aware we don’t usually blog about Hip Hop on LR, but we do recognise genuine talent when we hear it, that’s why there no question this guy deserves a mention!!

He goes by the name of “Supanice” and he’s now considered one of the best freestlye MC’S in the North East.

Not only is Supanice lyrically and musically gifted,  he’s also no stranger to producing!  With help from close friend and equally gifted producer/rapper “Dom P”, he’s decided to come up with the arduous task of releasing a FREE mixtape, every month through out the year, and if that not enough dedication for you,  he also plans to release his debut album under his new label Castle On the Map Records next year.

Hopefully we will see him follow in  the same footsteps as foreign beggars and make the cross over to the dark and dingy world of dubstep.

In the meantime expect good things from this label.

You can download all his latest mix tapes for free from Castle On The Map Records

Wow! I could sum up Outlook Festival 2011 in 2 words – absolutely mindblowing – but I’ll try and be a bit more descriptive!

In last year’s review we called Outlook Festival ‘life affirming’. I might have to go further this year. Outlook Festival is bass music Mecca – an essential pilgrimage for any self respecting bass music fan be that dubstep, drum & bass, techno or house.

Not only did we love Outlook 2011 but we also spent a week travelling through Croatia before the festival & I would be remiss if I didn’t mention it in this review. Hvar Island is one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen, with hands down the best looking people I’ve ever come across. Head up North on the mainland to Plitvice National Park & you are treated to some of the clearest water I’ve seen anywhere in the world. Absolutely stunning. Croatia is a gorgeous country & if you’re thinking of spending time there before next year’s Outlook festival then I’d definitely recommend it!

On to the festival itself. We were told that the queues were bad getting in to the festival on the 31st but in fairness it took us only about 15 minutes to get in, get our passes and get set up. The new stages were very impressive, the basketball court with it’s oldschool ghettoblaster styled DJ-box was great fun.

The beach stage was as good as ever but it had to be said that the beach was extremely busy (simply with the larger capacity crowd this year).

Head into the Fort arena’s at night time & the impressiveness continues. The air is boiling with bass frequencies that sound like you’re stuck in a thunderstorm of bass.

We have heard reports of people being robbed or getting in fights & in fact one of our group did get a bag stolen. I really believe that wasn’t the norm though, the vast majority of people we met had the same chilled out, friendly vibe as last year. It’s a simple fact that if you stick 12-13,000 people in one place there will always be some bad apples.

The new stages were a great addition & although they didn’t feel part of the same festival as last year (they were more akin to something found at Global Gathering, Rockness or any other large festival) … can you imagine if they didn’t have those stages? No-one would have got in anywhere – it would have been way too busy. Besides, if you want a niche festival then Outlook (this year) wasn’t the place for it … but we expected that because dubstep & bass music has garnered such mainstream popularity over the last 12 months.

A special mention must go out to the visual effects & lighting people – the visuals were some of the best I’ve seen at any festival with a combination of HD projectors, great material & world class lighting rigs.

This review would be impartial if we failed to mention some of the bad points of the festival:

  • Toilets / Showers – The toilets this year (although we often saw them emptying / cleaning the portaloos) were large & the showers (unless you showered at 5AM) were freezing & that was after a 45 minute wait. Many people opted to shower in the dog baths.
  •

  • The Dust – Although it was undoubtedly better than last year, the dust was still a problem although I fear that there isn’t much more the organisers can do apart from concrete the whole place.
  •

  • Passport Retrieval – Shambolic is frankly the only way I can describe the passport retrieval queue at the end of the festival. 2 people to sort out & give 12,000 people their passports back? Come on! Also, why did they need our passports in the first place? Take a photocopy & job done.

I don’t want to end this review on a bad note because in no way was it anywhere near the worst organised or run festival I’ve been to (Global Gathering still holds that accolade). The people were brilliant, the stages, soundsystems, visuals, lighting & sets were incredible. But, please Outlook – no more people next year OK? Keep it at this capacity or shrink it again.

Lazy Records Rating: 4/5

Morning all! It’s been way too long since I’ve posted something (been busy doing personal stuff) but I’m back with some bangers!

First up, the Mastertrons remix of Gorillaz – Feel Good Inc. On the 9th August 2009 the Italian duo The Mastertrons was born. On the 9th August 2010, they launched their first EP & were officially one year old. Fast forward to the same day this year & with 3 EPs under their belt they’re firmly established on the dubstep scene. They released this track to mark their 3 year anniversary & in just 4 days it received over 10,000 plays – surpassing all their previous records.

Gorillaz – Feel Good Inc (Mastertrons Remix)

Next up is Australian Drivepilot’s new electro track called Sentinel:

I loved Tiesto’s ‘Magik’ series (in particular Magik 6 ‘Live from Amsterdam’). Check out Yahel – Voyage, Free Radical – Surreal (En Motion Remix) & of course Kamaya Painters – Endless Wave (a Tiesto co-production).

Having said that, I felt he went off the boil for a while seemingly too busy being the best DJ in the world but this track gets us back on, erm, track. The original is great but this gives it that little extra kick needed for 2011!

Marcel Woods – Advanced (Tiesto Remix)

From an established DJ / producer in the trance genre, to a newer – but no less talented (IMHO) one. There’s one name on everyone’s lips at the moment when it comes to trance music: Arty

We spoke to him a while ago wanting to do an interview. Unfortunately the interview never happened (entirely our own fault) but he is a very down-to-earth & approachable guy.

Paul Van Dyk – We Come Together (Arty Remix)

Also check out Arty’s own track – Kate
